Jefferson Davis, c1860 Jefferson Davis, c1860

This is probably the most famous photographic image of Davis, taken by Mathew B. Brady in Washington just before the Civil War. There are prints of it in the collections of both the National Archives and the Library of Congress.

The photograph is particularly significant because there were no verified photographs of Davis taken during the war years. His wife stated in the 1890s that one image was of wartime vintage, but it pictures a younger man than is shown here.

The Library of Congress has two web sites that prominently feature Brady's work, one composed of Civil War photographs, and another that is a collection of daguerreotypes from 1839 to 1864. Brady's portraiture is also the subject of an online exhibit of the National Portrait Gallery.
