Jefferson Davis, c1860The photograph is particularly significant because there were no verified photographs of Davis taken during the war years. His wife stated in the 1890s that one image was of wartime vintage, but it pictures a younger man than is shown here.
The Library of Congress has two web sites that prominently feature Brady's work, one composed of Civil War photographs, and another that is a collection of daguerreotypes from 1839 to 1864. Brady's portraiture is also the subject of an online exhibit of the National Portrait Gallery.
